In January 1931,a mysterious phone call was left for insurance agent William Herbert Wallace at his chess club in Liverpool, England, summoning him to a meeting the following night at an address that, it turned out, did not exist. While Wallace wandered the city searching for the phantom street, his wife Julia was beaten to death in the front parlor of their modest home. Almost immediately, suspicion fell on Wallace himself, but the timing was maddeningly tight and the evidence stubbornly ambiguous. Had a killer lured him away to clear the house, or had Wallace engineered the whole thing as an elaborate alibi?
